Increase in fraud linked to the recession

In case there was any doubt about whether fraud truly increases in a recession, here is the evidence provided by CIFAS' 2009 statistics, published last week:

'An analysis of fraud trends during the first half of 2009 reveals a continuing surge in fraudulent activity.

43% jump in the number of victims of impersonation - over 52,000 victims were recorded by CIFAS members,
74% increase in identity fraud compared with the same period in 2008 (which includes both victims of impersonation and the creation of a fictitious identity by the fraudster). It is worth noting that forged or altered UK passports are the most commonly used document in support of fraudulent applications.
Continued rise in facility takeover frauds.'
